Deep stuff

So according to a left-leaning colleague helmet-laws are justified because society picks up the bill if your unprotected head smashes on the road pavement. Then what about car drivers? Wouldn't they be much safer were they fully outfitted in football uniforms? (Although seeing someone driving in the other direction wearing the uniform of a hated rival school might induce some people to tackle the other car...)

Free-market reforms are forever doomed

Unfortunately four years with control of the presidency and of both houses of congress was not enough for Republicans to even attempt some free-market reforms. The inevitable consequence is that Democrats will win elections again and again, and the much needed reforms in the health care system, the educational system, taxes, social security, etc, etc...will go down in history as botched utopias that never saw the light of day. Democrats were so saddened by Bush's victory in 2004, but they can now rightly celebrate: the GOP has done nothing and continues to do nothing. Yes we are fighting a war, and the weather has been against us, but this was an opportunity that won't present itself again for a very long time. If Republicans don't push the agenda for more choice and opportunity, Democrats certainly won't. It's sad and depressing, but it's the reality we are facing.

Yet another blog

Well, pretty soon we will all have several blogs, in a Babel of different tongues, and then we'll become a blog ourselves. So here I am, you can call me Plinius. I'm a Hayek fan, semi-libertarian, and anti-comunist. But I also like to question my convictions from time to time. I embrace incoherence, e.g., although I truly believe in free-markets and free-trade, I would'nt sell anything even if I was forced, I'd rather not buy anything either, and if I see change on the pavement I don't pick it up. Actually, that's not true. I have a friend who collects change the he finds on the side-walk, so one day I saw a couple of quarters and I thought "I'll pick these up and give them to my friend"...unfortunately they were stuck to the ground with some kind of glue.
